4 Simple Anti-Aging Makeup Tricks

Makeup Tips

When we were teenagers we wanted to look older, we loaded on the blue eyeliner and the frosty pink lip gloss (hey, it was the 80's) in an effort to look more mature.  Now that we're in our 30's we want to erase a few years off our faces, funny how life works. Here's four anti-aging makeup tricks we've incorporated into our daily beauty routines.

1. Get Wide Eyed

As you get older it can seem as though your eyes are getting smaller.  If you're concerned about smallish eyes or dark undereye shadows, use a liner like Kajal Extreme ($18) only on the upper lash line.  Putting liner on the lower lash line can shrink eyes and emphasize dark shadows. When it comes to choosing eyeshadow shades you don't need to steer clear of shimmery shades, but stick with warm peaches and rose tones to keep your eyes looking bright.  The shadow duo below is Saint Basil's ($20), a peachy duo that will brighten and highlight.

Younger Looking Makeup Tips

2. Shine On

Highlighting your cheekbones can give you a real lift and bring radiance back to a dull complection.  The shimmer should be soft and subtle, try a rose shade like our Glacier Luminous Cream Blush ($20).  It's a shimmering rose quartz that works on all skin tones. Apply luminizer along the cheek bone and on the brow bone to really shine.

3. Get Warmed Up

A golden glow can really warm up the skin and give you a more radiant, younger look. With a fluffy brush, dust a powder bronzer on your forehead, nose, and cheeks and you can even use bronzer to contour just below the cheekbones to make them look really sculpted. Our go-to is Brazilian Bronzer ($25) for a natural looking glow.

4. Think Pink

While dark shades can be aging on some skin tones, bright shades can be flattering. A bright lipstick with pink undertones makes you look younger and adds brightness to your face.  Swipe on a bright lip shade like Belarus Ultra Luxe Lipstick ($15), to really freshen up your look. Just remember to tone down your eye makeup and blush if you're wearing a bold lip.

The 5 Most Common Mascara Mistakes – Are You Guilty Of These Mascara Mishaps?

Mascara Mistakes Too Many Coats

You've been applying it for years, put it on every day and maybe it's even your desert island must-have but there are still pit-falls to avoid when applying mascara.  Here's the 5 most common mascara mishaps to avoid.

1. Too Many Coats

Most mascaras are only meant to be layered twice. The more you put on, the more likely it will dry mid-application - when you put fresh mascara on top of a stiff coat, it's going to clump and look spidery.  Stick to one or two coats for natural looking lashes unless you are going for the spider lash look.

2. Pumping The Wand

If we had a nickel for every time we saw someone pumping their mascara wand….  Pumping the wand in and out of the tube pushes extra air into the tube causing clumps and flakes. Pumping also introduces bacteria and will cause your mascara to dry out faster.  To get a good amount of product on your brush, twist the wand as you pull it out of the tube.

3. Using it For More Than 6 Months

Mascaras have a shelf life of up to 6 months, if you can't remember when you bought your mascara, toss it. The germs that grow in old mascaras can cause redness, itchiness, and even sties or pinkeye. If you often forget when you purchased your mascaras, stick on a label with the date you opened it.

4. Exposed Roots

This is probably the most common mascara issue that we see.  If you neglect your roots (especially if your hair is fair) your lashes will look shorter than they actually are.  The perfect mascara application begins at the root of your lashes – place the wand at the root and gently wiggle back and forth as you pull the wand towards the tips.

5. Pressing Too Hard

Press too hard at the base, and you get brush marks on your upper lid.  Use a light hand when applying your mascara but if you do make a mistake, clean up with a Q-tip dipped in Face Off Makeup Remover ($20).

Long Lash Mascara

For perfect looking lashes every time, try our Conditioning Long Lash Mascara ($16).  Lengthens and thickens from root to tip without clumping or flaking and conditions lashes with Shea Butter and Silk Protein.
