The 5 Most Common Mascara Mistakes – Are You Guilty Of These Mascara Mishaps?

Mascara Mistakes Too Many Coats

You've been applying it for years, put it on every day and maybe it's even your desert island must-have but there are still pit-falls to avoid when applying mascara.  Here's the 5 most common mascara mishaps to avoid.

1. Too Many Coats

Most mascaras are only meant to be layered twice. The more you put on, the more likely it will dry mid-application - when you put fresh mascara on top of a stiff coat, it's going to clump and look spidery.  Stick to one or two coats for natural looking lashes unless you are going for the spider lash look.

2. Pumping The Wand

If we had a nickel for every time we saw someone pumping their mascara wand….  Pumping the wand in and out of the tube pushes extra air into the tube causing clumps and flakes. Pumping also introduces bacteria and will cause your mascara to dry out faster.  To get a good amount of product on your brush, twist the wand as you pull it out of the tube.

3. Using it For More Than 6 Months

Mascaras have a shelf life of up to 6 months, if you can't remember when you bought your mascara, toss it. The germs that grow in old mascaras can cause redness, itchiness, and even sties or pinkeye. If you often forget when you purchased your mascaras, stick on a label with the date you opened it.

4. Exposed Roots

This is probably the most common mascara issue that we see.  If you neglect your roots (especially if your hair is fair) your lashes will look shorter than they actually are.  The perfect mascara application begins at the root of your lashes – place the wand at the root and gently wiggle back and forth as you pull the wand towards the tips.

5. Pressing Too Hard

Press too hard at the base, and you get brush marks on your upper lid.  Use a light hand when applying your mascara but if you do make a mistake, clean up with a Q-tip dipped in Face Off Makeup Remover ($20).

Long Lash Mascara

For perfect looking lashes every time, try our Conditioning Long Lash Mascara ($16).  Lengthens and thickens from root to tip without clumping or flaking and conditions lashes with Shea Butter and Silk Protein.

How To Get Spider Glam Lashes

We love long, thick lashes, the more dramatic, the better!   This is why the whole spider lash trend—as in defined, borderline clumpy lashes—excites us so much. You can get the look with false lashes, like Ginnifer Goodwin has here, or you can just use a generous layering of regular mascara and pinch the ends of your lashes together to clump the sections.  This is a trend that is definitely continuing well into 2013.

How To Apply Mascara On Lower Lashes

Here's our latest Q and A, keep sending in your makeup questions and we will do our best to answer them all.

Q: How can I apply mascara to my lower lashes without creating a smudgy mess?

A: Your regular mascara can be applied just as effectively on your bottom lashes as it is on your top lashes with just a few tricks.  We like to tissue off some of the excess mascara on the brush before applying to our lower lashes, this helps prevent any clumping on these really delicate lashes.  Another trick we like is to fold a square of tissue and hold it under our lashes with our non-dominant hand while we apply our mascara, this way any smudging will end up on the tissue and not on your skin.  We find we get the best results when we hold our mascara brush vertically instead of horizontally and use the tip of the wand to lightly paint the lashes.  You want a very light coating of mascara on your bottom lashes so they don't end up looking clumpy or spidery.  As with any makeup technique, practice makes perfect.
